Once again, it's time to see what our hard-working farmer and his wife have been up to. It's been a busy summer for Farmer Applequist and his Missus. The fields have been cut, the hay is bailed and put up, the fences have all been mended and the cows have been brought home for the winter. With morning chores finished up, they are headed down to the milkshed to give it a good cleaning. The Missus always enjoys walking down the path to the old shed. Yellow and purple wildflowers are scattered along the now narrow walkway. Once inside, they take a moment to look around and take inventory of the old milkshed. Not as busy as it once was, the 'ole shed holds many memories of their family. Taking a moment to reflect, the Missus can almost hear her children, now grown, laughing and darting in and out of the shed during a game of hide and seek. Every morning before school, their children gathered to help with the morning chores, including milking the dairy cows and gathering eggs. After school, they helped weed the garden behind the milkshed and make butter in the old churn, now left standing unused just inside the door. In the west corner sits an old wooden barrel with a wood crate standing on top. Inside the crate is a vintage glass milk bottle and feeding bottle. Leaning against the worn barrel are the pitchfork and shovel her husband had been
looking for just last week. And there hangs the lead rope her son had used to show his calf, who won a 1st place ribbon at the County Fair. All these things down by the milkshed may be old and dusty, but the memories they bring back are just as new as if it were yesterday.
